State Dinner (2005) was initially sketched out in 1994 as a response to the newly instituted North American Free Trade Act. Dormant for over a decade, the tracings of individual boundaries of North America state territories on Chinet paper plates (now Royal Chinet) was re-booted in 2005 for inclusion in the solo Red Head exhibition entitled Paper Maps. The 95 states, provinces and territories of Canada, Mexico and the United States are painted in watercolour at the same scale and in the predominant flag colour of each nation. Arranged alphabetically, North America is re-presented as a statistical inventory of it parts in a puzzle that defies federalist affiliations but is realized, ultimately, on disposable plates.
