BOMARC Monument, North Bay
2007 site views
Over the course of their individual careers as artists and curators, Gil McElroy and Peter Dykhuis have researched military histories and technologies in relationship to the current Canadian context. Since 2007, they have combined forces to produce Cold War Artifacts, a series of investigative projects about historical military artifacts still evident in the Canadian landscape. McElroy, a ‘base-brat’ whose father was a technician servicing equipment on the Pinetree and DEW lines, is the lead researcher who, while tracing personal family histories, speaks to the larger narratives of the Cold War. As witnessed by the 2007 exhibition in North Bay titled BOMARC: The Shadow of the Shield, Dykhuis collaborates with McElroy in articulating the physical installation and final support materials.
